The Zayed International Prize recognizes contributions to the field of sustainable and environmental development in support of global initiatives such as the Sustainable Development Goals, Rio +20, the Millennium Development Goals, Agenda 21, and the Johannesburg Plan of Implementation for Sustainable Development. The Prize is classified into four different categories:
- Global leadership in environment and sustainable development
- Scientific/technological achievements in environment
- Environmental action leading to positive change in society
- Young Scientists Award for Environmental Sustainability
Mathis Wackernagel was awarded the Zayed International Prize, jointly with UNEP, for his work with the Ecological Footprint in the “Environmental action leading to positive change in society” category.
