Global Footprint Network is seeking a skilled and snappy writer with social media experience and an interest in sustainability to fill the role of Social Media & Communications Associate. He/She will write and edit for the email newsletter, website, and social media; handle press inquiries; coordinate media campaigns; write op-eds; prepare marketing materials; support development communications; and contribute to report production and special projects. This position reports to the Director of Communications.

Global Footprint Network is seeking an experienced Administrative Assistant to join our wonderful team and to help support the mission of the organization.  We are looking for an organized team player who can work independently and also follow directions. 

The Administrative Assistant will report to the Vice President of Operations.

Performance Profile

The main responsibilities of this position are as follow:

  • Answer incoming phone calls professionally and welcome visitors and staff to the office.
  • Provide general administrative support to the office, including scheduling meetings, buying office supplies, and assistance with human resources.
  • Coordinate and schedule board meetings, gather and distribute board materials, record and compile minutes of meetings.
  • Prepare and edit correspondence and other documents as necessary.
  • Maintain shared calendars, plan events, and coordinate travel for staff.
  • Assist with general clerical duties including scanning, photocopying, faxing, filing and mailing.
  • Maintain the kitchen area and occasionally prepare lunches.
  • Create a maintain a pleasant office environment, including organizing files, preparing coffee and food, cleaning common areas, watering plants, and decorating for holidays and special events.
  • Potentially provide executive support with calendar management and scheduling across international time zones. 
  • Assist with data entry and other administrative tasks, as needed.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have the following minimum qualifications:

  • At least one year of providing administrative support, preferably to an office or team.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational and planning skills, including follow-through ability.
  • Demonstrated initiative.  Ability to identify things that need to be done or areas where assistance would be helpful, with the desire to jump in and assist without being asked. 
  • Knowledge of standard office administrative practices and procedures.
  • Proficient computer skills and in-depth knowledge of Microsoft Office for the PC (Word, Outlook and Excel).  Experience with Salesforce, Go-To-Meeting and Skype a plus.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.

Global Footprint Network is seeking an experienced Office Manager to be based in the Global Footprint Network office located in Geneva, Switzerland. S/he will ensure the smooth functioning of the Global Footprint Network operations in Europe. The candidate will provide coordination and support functions for the Global Footprint Network team in Europe while effectively coordinating with the Brussels and Mediterranean Region offices. S/he will report to the VP of Operations, based in the head office in Oakland, USA.

Performance Profile

The main responsibilities of this position are as follows:

  1. Work closely with management and staff to implement administrative management policies
  2. Provide support, advise and analysis to the Geneva staff and Oakland operations in budgeting, financial management, office and staffing needs
  3. Oversee legal, safety, fiscal, and other office and staff compliance requirements
  4. Assist in implementing and improving (where required) routine general administration services

The main responsibilities will be:

Accounting/Financial Support

  • Ensure all financial transactions (invoices, invoicing, petty cash accounts and claims) are up-to-date, efficiently followed up, recorded, referenced and filed
  • Work closely with VP of Operations (Oakland-based) and Captus (finance contractors based in Geneva) to support financial reporting and auditing processes
  • Administer all purchasing and procurement for the office
  • Manage filing and storage and maintain inventories of office equipment, materials, and books/publications, etc.

Human Resources

  • Implement HR and financial policies and procedures
  • Supervise the employee work permit issues and employee benefit plans

General Office Support

  • Coordinate and actively assist in the organizing of workshops, events, meetings, etc.
  • Process and appropriately respond to all office mail
  • Service and coordinate business travel.
  • Management and coordination of external visits (student organizations, for example)
  • Liaison with the relevant Swiss authorities to ensure that Geneva office is in good standing, as needed with United Nations, FIPOI, and the building administrators.
  • Management and implementation of internal and external accreditations for Geneva staff members.
  • Assist with the organization of Board meeting when they are organized in Europe and ensure Board decisions cover legal requirements for the organisation’s Swiss Foundation status.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in office administration, including accounting and human resources
  • Experience working with an international NGO in Geneva preferred
  • Proven ability to coordinate projects and meet deadlines
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Excellence in professional writing and communication skills 
  • Must be a reliable, detail-oriented self-starter 
  • Proficiency in Excel, Microsoft Word, Salesforce and financial software (such as QuickBooks) preferred
  • Fluency in English and French highly desirable

Research Analyst

Research Analyst (Oakland)

Position Summary

Global Footprint Network promotes a sustainable economy by advancing the Ecological Footprint, a tool that makes sustainability measurable. Together with our partners, we coordinate research, develop methodological standards, and provide decision makers with robust resource accounts to help the human economy operate within the Earth's ecological limits.

At the Global Footprint Network, we are always interested in qualified candidates to join our outstanding Research Team. Currently, there are no staff openings in the Research Department, however, we welcome applications for future consideration.

The typical entry level position is a Research Analyst, who supports the maintenance and continuous improvement of the National Footprint Accounts. These accounts serve as the basis of our Ecological Footprint analyses worldwide. The Research Analyst will learn to apply the accounts in projects with governments, businesses and other organizations.  In time, s/he will have opportunities to present on the Ecological Footprint method to clients and scientific communities, as well as on the outcome of specific research projects.

Some seasoned candidates may join the team as Research Scientists, however, these general qualifications would also apply.

The Research Analyst will be based in Oakland and work closely with members of the National Footprint Accounts team, project managers, and others working to help maintain and improve the accounts and to apply the Ecological Footprint. Application activities will require retrieving and analyzing data, generating graphs, contributing to and writing of reports and papers, some of which may be submitted for publication in scientific journals. Additionally, the Research Analyst will work closely with Global Footprint Network’s team members in Europe assisting them on Footprint applications through data, graphs and maps generation as well as report writing. 

The Research Analyst will report to the Director of the Research Department. 

Performance Profile

National Accounts (approximately 50%) 

  • Reviewing specific areas of scientific research, and incorporating findings into National Footprint Accounts calculation to improve the accuracy and relevance of the metric. 
  • Collaborating with research partners such as government agencies, academic institutions, and NGOs to validate and improve the data in the accounts and the calculation methodology, and to develop needed scientific information not otherwise available. 
  • Contributing to programming of the National Footprint Accounts, and to supporting and applying quality assurance procedures. 


Applications (approximately 50%)

  • Developing and refining approaches for applying the Ecological Footprint in a wide variety of contexts. 
  • Contributing to projects focusing on application of the Ecological Footprint by generating graphs and maps, retrieving data and by analyzing trends. 
  • Contributing to and writing of reports and other documentation that serve as project deliverables
  • Providing summaries and interpretations of Footprint data for Global Footprint Network internal use, as well as for clients, partners, and the general public. 
  • Collaborating with the Global Footprint Network team members in Europe.
  • Supporting the communications department in its use of Footprint concepts and data.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have the following qualifications, skills and experience:

Education

  • Master’s degree or a Bachelor’s degree with at least one year of research experience in a relevant field, such as environmental science, environmental or natural resource management, statistics or ecological economics.

Experience

  • Ability to analyze and manipulate large data sets in Excel and MySQL. Proficiency in Excel VBA and/or MATLAB is desirable.  Additionally, C#, GAMS, Python (GIS), Statistics (R and STATA) or CGE modeling experience would be useful.
  • Interest in global resource issues and sustainability practice. 
  • Excitement about being part of a small but growing organization whose influence on global movement toward sustainability is rapidly expanding.
  • Ability to work well in a highly interactive team environment and across different time zones.
  • Well-organized, self-motivated, and able to meet project deadlines. 
  • Skilled in both technical writing and oral communications. 
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work with individuals from a wide variety of backgrounds and cultures. 
  • Experience with assessments in fisheries, grazing or livestock a plus. 
  • Fluency in European languages other than English a plus. 
  • Working knowledge of LCA and I/O methodologies a plus. 

Travel

This position is based in Oakland, CA (USA) and requires interactions with Global Footprint Network’s team members in Geneva (Switzerland). Occasional travel may be undertaken to attend meetings, conferences, events, and for project scoping and development.

Qualifications
Recent graduates with a degree in communications, public relations, marketing, or related field as well as advanced undergraduate students are encouraged to apply. Global Footprint Network is seeking interns to assist its Research team. The Department of Research & Standards within Global Footprint Network strives towards the continuous improvement of the science of the Ecological Footprint and develops projects rigorously grounded in its methodology.

Recent graduates with strong quantitative, analytical or coding skills are encouraged to apply. A degree in Environmental Policy, Forestry, Environmental Science, Climatology, Computer Science, Engineering, Earth Science, Agriculture, Aquaculture, Biology, Ecology, Urban Planning, Resource Management, Geography or Business or a related field is desired. Advanced undergraduate students are also encouraged to apply.

We are seeking interns to perform specific tasks focused on the following:

  • Carbon Footprint analysis
  • Forest land use analysis (forestry research)
  • Grazing-land use analysis (livestock sustainability)
  • Fisheries analysis
  • Cropland use analysis (agriculture research)
  • Spatial research on land use and primary productivity (ArcGIS and data sources)
  • The development of a Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) model for Ecological Footprint analysis

Responsibilities may include the following:

  • Assist with a range of technical and project work
  • Summarize results and research to be presented to the Research team

Qualifications

Global Footprint Network is seeking an intern to assist with External Affairs, which consists of a range of fundraising and business development activities. Recent graduates with a degree in communications, public relations, writing, sales, marketing, non-profit management, environmental policy and/or sciences, or related fields are encouraged to apply. Advanced undergraduate students are also encouraged to apply. 

Depending on skills and interests, intern projects may include:

  • Assisting with the preparation and submission of fundraising letters of inquiry, proposals, grant reports, and thank you letters;
  • Researching and targeting individual, foundation, and corporate donor prospects;
  • Assisting with the maintenance and improvement of our grants pipeline, major donor prospect pipeline, and contact management database;
  • Helping to plan and organize special events;
  • Participating in our mid-year and annual appeal campaigns; and
  • Helping to maintain donor relationships.
